"Born and brought up in upmarket Juhu, she felt it was a challenge to play a small town girl studying in a Delhi university . Students there often conduct street plays and Sonam felt being a part of them would help her open up as an actor.

She did not want to limit her portrayal and wanted to look absolutely convincing," said a source. Sonam said, Playing a student was a completely new area for me.

It was a challenge to mould myself to the sensibilities of a small-town girl. I wanted to be well prepared for Ranjhanaa and participating in street plays was one way of doing so.
